ABSTRACT

The development of parallel computing hardware in the last decade has opened the way to a sharp increase in the application of Artificial Neural Networks. Deep Learning, also called modern Artificial Intelligence, is making its way into virtually all industry branches and any area of everyday life. The generative Large Language Models we so eagerly use are only the tip of the iceberg, widely noticed for their extraordinary innovation. However, the space for using various types of other AI models is incomparably wider. It includes, for example, using Supervised Learning to identify objects, Unsupervised Learning to classify undiscovered phenomena, or Reinforcement Learning to control rovers and drones.

For this reason, AI is often referred to as a multidisciplinary, multi-domain, or multi-modal technology. Weapon systems are most often complex technical systems combining advanced mechanics, electronics, and software in one piece of equipment. Therefore, it is hard to imagine a better field for applying modern Artificial Intelligence. Trying to list only some of them, let's look at the use of AI in situational awareness systems of mobile robots and drones, vision systems of industrial robots, machine vision systems including pattern recognition in images and video, optimizing the shape of air profiles or the turbine engine compressor disc, analyzing and assessing equipment operators' biometric data, predictive maintenance management systems, identification of objects against the background of the sky, water and ground, and finally modules for seeking, targeting and guiding various types of combat assets.

In this session, our primary focus is on the application of various Artificial Intelligence methods and models in defense and security vehicles, equipment, and systems. We delve into the specific applications and their implications, providing a comprehensive understanding of the topic.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZER

Lt. Col. Konrad Wojtowicz is a leader of the Intelligent Mechatronic Systems Research Team focused on Deep Learning applications, mainly for defense and security equipment. He is an assistant professor and researcher at the Faculty of Mechatronics, Armament, and Aerospace of the Military University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland, currently serving as an Associate Dean for Students and International Affairs. He is a former head of the Laboratory of Avionics and Air Armament. He has participated in UAV development projects funded by the EU and NATO and has spoken in ATC projects funded by NATO in the field of UAVs.
He received an M.Sc. degree in mechatronics, aerospace engineering, air armament, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in the area of HIL simulators for UAV mission and control system computers.
He has participated in research on developing an aircraft avionics system and simulation environment. He has been assigned to support military commissions as a Ministry of Defense and Air Force HQ expert. He conducts his research on avionics software development, software engineering, deep learning, and simulators.
