ABSTRACT

Non-contact measurement techniques play a crucial role in the defense and security sectors, enabling accurate and reliable measurements without direct physical contact with the target and remote access. This special session aims to explore the latest advances and applications of non-contact measurement techniques in the defense and security context. The session will bring together the experts in the field to disseminate their research, demonstrate latest innovations and discuss emerging trends in this rapidly evolving field. Topics of interest consist of, but are not limited to, remote sensing, large spectral imaging systems including thermography, laser-based measurements, and electromagnetic techniques.

TOPICS

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Thermal imaging for threat detection.
  • Laser-based non-contact metrology for characterization of defense targets and structures.
  • Electromagnetic techniques for hidden object detection.
  • Non-contact strain measurement for structural health monitoring and structural integrity assessment of critical defense structures.
  • Hyperspectral imaging to identify and analyze chemical compounds in defense and security scenarios.
  • Non-contact measurement of mechanical vibrations of defense systems to assess performance and detect anomalies.
  • Non-destructive evaluation of composite materials used in defense applications.
  • Optical imaging for facial recognition in surveillance.
  • Remote sensing of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for aerial surveillance and target identification in defense and security operations.
  • Non-contact measurement of biometric signals for defense and security applications.
  • Terahertz imaging for material characterization for defense and security purposes.
  • Multi-sensor fusion for improved situational awareness for situational awareness and decision-making in defense and security operations.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Nicola Giulietti received his Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering from Polytechnic University of Marche, Ancona, Italy, in 2022. He is currently post-doctoral research fellow in Mechanical and Thermal Measurements at Politecnico di Milano. His main research interests are in the development of innovative measurement systems, with special focus on computer vision and artificial intelligence.

Milena Martarelli received her Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 from Imperial College, London, UK. She is associated professor in Mechanical and Thermal Measurements at the Università Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy. She has authored or co-authored more that hundred papers published in conference proceedings and international scientific journals. Her current research interests include non-contact measurement sensors and technology applied to nondestructive diagnostics and vibro-acoustics for electromechanical systems performance assessment.

Paolo Castellini received the Ph.D. degree in 1996 at University of Padova, Italy. Since 2019 he is Full Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Mathematical Sciences at the Polytechnic University of Marche, where he teaches Mechanical and Thermal Measurements and Testing. Prof. Paolo Castellini has more than 30 years activity in the development and application of instrumentation for mechanical measurements in dynamic analysis and vibro-acoustic. Paolo Castellini is active in several EU funded project. He was the coordinator of a CleanSky EU project and of an European Industrial Doctorate.
His research interests are related to non-contact mechanical measurement techniques, mainly based on laser and microphone arrays. He is author of more than hundred papers in international journals and conferences.
